Job Description

Job Title: Software Engineer, Back End (Boulder Opal). Location: Santa Monica, CA (Hybrid – 2 days/week in office)

As a Back-end Engineer on the Boulder Opal Scale Up team, you’ll help design and build scalable, high-performance backend systems; You’ll work closely with researchers to translate cutting-edge science into production software; contributing to tools that power SDKs and cloud platforms; This is a great opportunity for backend developers interested in quantum computing.

Responsibilities:

• Develop scalable client and backend systems using Python.
• Build efficient service-to-service communications using modern protocols.
• Collaborate with researchers to translate scientific code into production-ready software.
• Work closely with product, frontend, and infrastructure teams;
• Maintain high standards for code quality, security, and system reliability.
• Troubleshoot and optimize backend performance;
• Analyze experimental data to detect anomalies and support decisions.
• Promote architecture reuse across various product lines.
• Support other tasks within your skill set or with reasonable training.

Qualifications:

• Up to 5 years of experience in backend software development using Python, Rust, C++, or similar languages.
• Strong collaboration skills with engineering and research teams;
• Proficient in algorithms, data processing, and building scalable pipelines.
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Preferred:

• Experience with gRPC, GraphQL, or RESTful APIs.
• Familiarity with AWS, GCP, or Azure;
• Background in database optimization and distributed systems.
• Knowledge of Python web frameworks (Flask, Django, FastAPI);
• Experience with scientific computing, signal processing, or system calibration.
• Exposure to data visualization tools like Plotly or Dash;
• Knowledge or interest in quantum computing or physics.
• Experience in start-up or fast-growing environments.
