Job Description

Job Title: Principal Quantum Circuit Compilation & Optimization Scientist. Location: Remote (USA) or onsite/hybrid in College Park, MD / Bothell, WA

Your work will directly influence teams across quantum applications, QEC, and trap design; You’ll also help shape company strategy, publish research, and serve as a public voice for IonQ’s compiler innovation.

Responsibilities:

  • Own and develop the compiler toolchain, including IR design, scheduling, routing, and hardware-aware optimization.
  • Measure and communicate compiler value, using hardware data to track improvements in gate fidelity and performance.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, offering technical insight that supports QEC, trap design, and application development;
  • Lead external communication, by publishing research, securing patents, and establishing IonQ as a thought leader in quantum compilation.
  • Support strategic decisions, advising executives and board members on the technical and commercial impact of compiler development.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 18+ years of experience or equivalent combination of education and professional work
  • 15+ years developing complex algorithms;
  • 10+ years in technical leadership roles
  • Experience with scientific programming languages (e.g., Python)
  • Deep knowledge of quantum information science
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred:

  • PhD in Physics, Computer Science, Math, or Quantum Information Science
  • Recognized expert in quantum circuit optimization and compilation
  • Proven track record in commercial-scale quantum compiler delivery;
  • Familiarity with compiler infrastructure like MLIR, LLVM, Rust, C++, and Python
  • Experience mentoring teams and influencing cross-disciplinary innovation
  • Ability to operate at both strategic and technical levels
