Scientist Intern, Device & Architecture Theory

Job Description

Job Title: Applied Scientist Intern, Device and Architecture Theory, AWS Center for Quantum Computing. Location: Pasadena, California, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct theoretical research to guide development of next-generation quantum processors.
  • Investigate device physics of superconducting circuits, novel qubits, gate schemes, and physical implementations of error-correcting codes.
  • Collaborate with theorists and experimentalists to explore innovative quantum computing approaches;
  • Participate in a multi-disciplinary team to support scientific innovation and advancement in quantum computing.
  • Contribute to publications, teaching, and engagement with the academic community.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or equivalent.
  • Research experience in quantum physics, including quantum computing, communication, sensing, atomic, molecular, or optical physics.
  • Proficient in a scientific programming environment;
  • Able to work 40 hours per week and commit to a 12-week internship.
  • Must be 18 years or older and able to relocate to Pasadena, CA.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with quantum error correction (qubit codes and/or bosonic codes).
  • Experience with numerical simulations of quantum systems;
  • Proven track record of impactful research on superconducting qubits, cavity/circuit QED, quantum optics, or related areas.
  • Experience collaborating across teams and working with experimental data.

  • Starting pay: $142,800 – $193,200 USD annually (based on experience, qualifications, and location).
