Atomic Physicist - Ion Generation

Job Description

Job Location: College Park, Maryland, United States

Responsibilities:

  • Experimentally characterize the ablation performance of novel Barium targets for quantum computing applications.
  • Collaborate with external partners on developing novel materials for ion generation;
  • Work closely with the ion trap and packaging team to improve opto-mechanical designs for laser ablation and ionization.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance rapid ion chain loading for scaling to hundreds of qubits.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Optics, or a related field with a strong background in experimental atomic physics.
  • Hands-on experience in designing, characterizing, and operating laser-cooled neutral atom or ion experiments;
  • Proven expertise in one or more of the following: laser ablation, atomic beams, photoionization, ion trapping, or cryogenics.
  • Excellent written communication skills for preparing technical documentation.

Preferred:

  • Experience with surface-electrode ion traps and ion trap measurements.
  • Practical knowledge in laser ablation for vaporized atomic or molecular species.
  • Expertise in chemistry, metallurgy, or materials science;
  • Engineering experience in transforming complex systems into products based on technical subsystem requirements.
  • 3+ years of relevant post-PhD experience.

  • Competitive salary range of $107,123 - $140,251, based on experience.
