CMP Development Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: CMP Development Engineer. Location: Albany, New York, United States

In this role, you will focus on semiconductor process and equipment development that supports IBM’s leadership in quantum computing, AI, and advanced technologies; You will join a team of hardware developers dedicated to maintaining and advancing semiconductor processes for cutting-edge computing.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and qualify state-of-the-art 300mm semiconductor process equipment.
  • Collaborate with equipment vendors, fab operations, and process teams to ensure tool health and performance.
  • Use tools such as web-based statistical process control (wSPC), SiView, and other wafer analysis software to collect, manage, and analyze data.
  • Assess process windows, design experiments (DOE), and implement continuous improvements to stabilize processes.
  • Design and execute experiments to develop CMP processes for advanced semiconductor technologies;
  • Partner with equipment vendors, material vendors, and internal IBM teams to drive process development and data package creation.
  • Stay up to date with industry research and semiconductor technology advancements;
  • Contribute to intellectual property generation and support IBM’s patenting efforts.
  • Communicate effectively across multidisciplinary teams and document findings.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, physics, materials science, or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in semiconductor process equipment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and collaboration tools such as Slack.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Preferred

  • Master’s Degree in a related field.
  • Experience with CMP tools, including recipe development and fab operations.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor fabrication process flows;
  • Experience in project management.
  • Familiarity with material analysis and measurement techniques.
