Mechanical Design Engineer, Quantum

Job Description

Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer, Quantum Compute Hardware Systems. Location: Berkeley, California

This position is ideal for someone who wants to grow in a multidisciplinary environment involving mechanical design, cryogenic engineering, and quantum technology.

Responsibilities:

Mechanical Design and Prototyping

  • Design mechanical components and subsystems such as cryostat assemblies, enclosures, and signal chain hardware
  • Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and Bills of Materials
  • Support design reviews, tolerance analyses, and documentation of mechanical interfaces;
  • Work with senior engineers on thermal and mechanical challenges related to cryogenic environments
  • Assist with prototype assembly, testing, and validation in the lab

Collaboration and Documentation

  • Work with hardware, cryogenic, RF, and systems teams;
  • Maintain accurate design documentation, version control, and traceability within the PLM system
  • Contribute to improvements in design processes and lab workflows

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering
  • At least 3 years of industry or academic experience including internships or project-based work
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software, with SolidWorks preferred;
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, GD and T, and basic tolerance analysis
  • Familiarity with materials and mechanical systems used in thermal or vacuum environments
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills;
  • Experience with design documentation, revision control, and PLM tools

Preferred:

  • Exposure to thermal or structural simulation tools such as ANSYS or COMSOL
  • Experience with hands-on prototyping, machining, or assembly;
  • Interest in cryogenic systems, precision hardware, or RF and electronic packaging

Compensation:

Base salary range: 120,000 to 150,000 dollars per year; Final compensation is based on experience, skills, and location; Rigetti offers competitive salaries, equity, medical, dental, and vision benefits, a 401(k) plan, paid parental leave, rejuvenation days and a vacation policy that aligns with local regulations.
