Cryogenic Assembly Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Cryogenic Assembly Engineer. Location: Poughkeepsie, New York, United States

Responsibilities:

  • Assemble, install, and maintain complex cryogenic systems used to cool IBM’s quantum devices.
  • Work independently or as part of a team to support the IBM Quantum development program.
  • Handle cryogenic and high-vacuum equipment for quantum system operations.
  • Install devices, wiring, and components inside cryogenic environments;
  • Operate and monitor dilution refrigerators and other temperature control systems.
  • Support lab activities including electronic, microwave, and computer rack assembly.
  • Interpret assembly drawings, Bills of Materials, and Process and Instrumentation Diagrams.
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to maintain IBM’s quantum infrastructure.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience in mechanical assembly
  • Ability to read assembly documentation (e.g., drawings, BoMs)
  • Use of basic hand tools;
  • Exposure to cryogenic or high-vacuum systems

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field
  • Hands-on experience with dilution refrigerators
  • Familiarity with CAD tools for mechanical design
  • Skills in electronic/microwave assembly;
  • Ability to monitor and operate complex lab equipment
  • Understanding of instrumentation and process diagrams
