Job Description
Job Title: Principal, Electro-Optics System Engineer. Location: Milpitas, California, United States
This role leads optical system development from early research through productization and works closely with internal teams and external vendors to deliver reliable, high-performance optical networks.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the full design and distribution of electro-optical and fiber optic systems for large quantum computing platforms
- Define, document, and own system-level optical requirements and performance specifications
- Collaborate with quantum architects, electronics, mechanical, and thermal engineering teams to manage design trade-offs
- Evaluate, qualify, and work with vendors supplying advanced fiber optic and photonic components
- Push technical limits to meet strict optical loss, stability, and thermal performance targets;
- Design, develop, debug, and validate optical communication systems at rack and system level
- Build and test prototypes, manage bills of materials, and support system integration
- Plan and execute validation testing from proof of concept through product release
- Deliver complete electro-optical networks for full-scale quantum systems in a fast-paced environment
- Develop Python scripts to control lab equipment and interface with control software and drivers
- Maintain detailed system documentation and performance reports;
- Provide clear technical leadership and guidance across engineering teams
Qualifications:
- Master’s or PhD in Physics, Optical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
- 10 or more years of relevant industry experience
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience designing, testing, and validating optical systems
- Strong background in fiber optic systems, photonic integrated circuits, and optical networking
- Experience with optical test equipment such as power meters, OBR, and optical spectrum analyzers
- Experience with instrumentation used in photonics and electronics industries
- Proficiency in Python for software control and automation;
- Experience developing test methods, optimization techniques, and tuning algorithms
- Proven experience transitioning systems from research to product development
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to lead projects and collaborate across multiple teams
Preferred:
- Industry experience with electro-optical systems
- Experience working with optical systems in vacuum environments
- Leadership experience in large-scale optical routing and management;
- Knowledge of photonics, non-linear optics, and thermal stability considerations
Compensation and Benefits:
- U.S. Base Salary Range: $230,000 to $240,000 USD
- Bay Area Salary Range: $240,000 to $255,000 USD
- Full-time employees are eligible for equity and comprehensive benefits;
- Compensation may vary based on experience, location, and qualifications
