Senior Scientist – AMO Theory

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Scientist – AMO Theory. Location: Bothell, WA | Toronto | Remote (for the right candidate)

Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed numerical and analytical models of multi-level atomic systems involving ion-laser interactions.
  • Perform simulations and analyses to translate physical modeling into engineering specifications aligned with algorithmic goals.
  • Generate technical documentation and communicate findings to guide hardware and system design;
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in AMO theory and quantum control to enhance IonQ’s quantum platforms.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing and development of training resources focused on AMO physics.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Quantum Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in quantum modeling or a related field.
  • Proficiency in scientific Python;
  • Experience with modeling complex quantum systems, including light-matter interactions and AMO physics.

Preferred:

  • 6+ years of post-PhD experience.
  • Experience working with trapped-ion systems.
  • Familiarity with C++ or Rust;
  • Knowledge of Mathematica or similar computer algebra systems.
  • Experience in experimental quantum computing or similar research;
  • Understanding of software development best practices and version control.
