Manager of Process Engineering

Job Description

Job Title: Manager of Process Engineering. Location: Milpitas, California, United States

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of opto-mechanical process engineers responsible for subassembly development and assembly builds.
  • Work with the packaging engineering team to design and develop assembly process flows for quantum computer subsystems.
  • Build subassemblies containing electronics and silicon photonics chips on PCBAs for both cryogenic and room-temperature vacuum systems.
  • Work with cross-functional teams and suppliers to finalize designs and assembly process flows.
  • Apply DFM, DFQ, and FMEA methodologies to meet subsystem design targets and requirements;
  • Deliver and verify equipment, tooling, and fixtures provided by suppliers with support from the supply chain team.
  • Complete process development and equipment or process buyoff using process capability analysis and reporting.
  • Release design documentation, work instructions, and control plans through controlled systems.
  • Train and audit the operations team and release processes and controls for volume assembly builds.
  • Manage in-house processes in collaboration with the Operations team.
  • Manage contractor manufacturing for externally performed processes.
  • Provide technical support for manufacturing and process-related issues.
  • Manage budgets, capital expenditures, hiring, and annual operating plan activities, including assembly tools and machines.
  • Project-manage internal and external deliverables, execution milestones, and schedules;
  • Coordinate project execution with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Support R&D development as well as the transition to volume production and system deployment.
  • Provide technical leadership and hands-on support when required to maintain performance and a safe work environment.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in an applicable engineering discipline, such as Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience applying engineering principles to solve complex opto-mechanical assembly process problems.
  • Experience with optical and photonics assembly and inspection equipment, processes, and material systems.
  • Experience with processes such as die attach, wire bonding, optical coupling, flip chip, and underfill.
  • Familiarity with key opto-mechanical packaging and assembly equipment.
  • Knowledge of piece-part supplier bases and quality systems;
  • Experience in the design, analysis, and assembly of subsystems.
  • Experience building NPI pilot lines, transferring processes to operations, and supporting manufacturing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong management and technical leadership abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership in ambiguous situations.
  • Self-starter who can work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience working at startups and/or large companies while managing opto-mechanical process engineering teams.
  • Proven track record of taking products from development through volume production.
  • Experience in datacom, telecom, optical communications, or related photonics industries.
  • Experience managing supplier and contract manufacturing relationships.
  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels of an organization, from company founders and engineers to technicians.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines while following disciplined engineering and manufacturing processes.
  • Lead-by-example approach with willingness to become hands-on during critical, all-hands-on-deck situations.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe and high-performing work environment.

Base Salary:

The estimated annual base salary ranges are based on geographic zones:

  • Zone 1, Bay Area and NYC: $176,500 to $207,400
  • Zone 2, including Los Angeles and Washington, DC: $158,900 to $186,700
  • Zone 3, including Austin, Chicago, and Sacramento: $141,200 to $165,900
  • Zone 4, including Nashville, Phoenix/Tempe, and many remote locations: $123,600 to $145,200

Actual compensation may vary based on qualifications, education, training, skills, experience, geographic location, business needs, and internal equity.
