Quantum Research Scientist, Computing

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Quantum Research Scientist. Location: Pasadena, CA

As a technical leader, you will guide high-impact research projects aligned with AWS’s engineering roadmap and contribute to innovations in quantum processor control and fault-tolerant computing.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of calibration and optimization methods for quantum error correction on superconducting qubit systems.
  • Design and execute experiments for benchmarking, tomography, and processor bring-up.
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to advance AWS’s quantum processor research;
  • Deliver original scientific contributions and publish findings in peer-reviewed venues.
  • Mentor junior researchers and contribute to a collaborative and inclusive team culture.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experimental experience in quantum computing.
  • Proven expertise in calibrating and operating multi-qubit systems;
  • Strong knowledge of qubit benchmarking and tomography protocols (such as randomized benchmarking).
  • Proficiency in a scientific programming environment (Python preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver research outcomes in collaborative projects.

Preferred:

  • Deep expertise in superconducting qubits, cavity/circuit QED, and microwave control systems.
  • Familiarity with implementing quantum error correction circuits on hardware;
  • Experience with automated quantum processor optimization for QEC applications.
  • Ability to simulate quantum systems to support experimental work.
