Job Description
Job Title: Research DevOps Engineer, Software, Center for Quantum Computing. Location: Pasadena, California, San Francisco, California, USA
The role focuses on improving the research software lifecycle through automation, standardization, and managing hybrid infrastructure that includes both cloud systems and physical lab hardware.
Responsibilities:
- Design and maintain standardized and reproducible development environments for research teams
- Manage dependencies, builds, and releases across multiple research software projects
- Build and improve CI/CD pipelines for automated testing and deployment;
- Manage hybrid infrastructure across cloud services and on-premise laboratory systems
- Automate infrastructure using tools such as Docker and AWS CDK
- Maintain high security standards while supporting fast-paced research development
- Implement monitoring and observability tools for system reliability and debugging
- Support team members through documentation, mentoring, and best practices
Qualifications:
- 3 or more years of professional software development experience (excluding internships)
- Strong programming experience in at least one modern language, including Python
- Experience working with Linux or Unix systems
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and build systems
- Experience using infrastructure-as-code tools to deploy cloud services
- Understanding of the full software development lifecycle;
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a research-focused team environment
Preferred:
- Experience working with scientists or researchers
- Experience with AWS services and tools such as AWS CDK
- Experience with DevSecOps tools, including GitLab
- Experience creating reproducible Python environments;
- Experience with AWS on-premise hardware solutions such as Outposts
- Knowledge of networking and network security fundamentals
- Experience with Kubernetes or high-performance computing systems
- Background in experimental physics or quantum computing
Benefits and Compensation:
- Base salary range:
- Pasadena, CA: USD 129,200 to 174,800 per year
- San Francisco, CA: USD 148,700 to 201,200 per year
