Research Scientist, Electromagnetic Modeling

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Research Scientist, Electromagnetic Modeling, Quantum. Location: Goleta, CA, USA

Responsibilities:

• Work on electromagnetic modeling of superconducting chips and packaging for both flagship systems and testbed designs. Use simulation results to estimate quantum gate fidelities;
• Study how different elements of the quantum circuit interact, including chip modes and packaging modes shaped by chip structures. Perform numerical simulations using tools such as HFSS and related EM software;
• Investigate surface loss effects that influence qubit T1 times. Build and maintain software that links EM simulations with the design workflow.
• Collaborate with design and fabrication teams by applying theoretical analysis to improve qubit coherence and gate performance. Present research in internal reviews, external meetings, and peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications:

• PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience in electromagnetic modeling or electromagnetism theory.
• Experience with superconducting qubits;
• Background in computational electromagnetics.
• Experience designing microwave components and packaging.
• Knowledge of condensed matter physics;
• Experience with qubit layout and verification, including an understanding of quantum gates.
• Experience working with experimental teams.
• Ability to code with Python.

Benefits and instructions:

• This is a full-time role with a US base salary range of 166,000 to 244,000 USD, plus bonus, equity, and benefits. Actual compensation depends on location, experience, and education;
