Job Description
Job Title: Electromagnetic Simulation Engineer. Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States
The Electromagnetic Simulation Engineer will lead the development of near field electromagnetic simulation and optimization capabilities within the Processor Design team; This role plays a central part in scaling ion trap architectures used in Quantum Processing Units.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and refine 3D near field electromagnetic models at RF frequencies using tools such as Ansys or COMSOL
- Incorporate realistic materials, geometries, and boundary conditions into simulations;
- Translate theoretical models into scalable and manufacturable QPU architectures
RF System Design
- Model and analyze RF coupling and system level behavior
- Use tools such as LTspice or similar circuit simulators
- Study parasitic coupling and near field RF behavior
Workflow Automation
- Build automated simulation and optimization pipelines
- Use Python, Julia, or MATLAB for data analysis and numerical optimization
- Improve simulation speed, repeatability, and accuracy
Design Integration
- Collaborate with quantum physicists, hardware engineers, and fabrication teams
- Ensure simulation results align with manufacturing processes and design constraints
- Support system level integration of simulation insights into hardware design
Capability Development
- Help establish in house electromagnetic modeling standards
- Define best practices for simulation workflows
- Support long term scaling of ion trap processor designs
Qualifications:
- 3 or more years of experience using Ansys, COMSOL, or similar FEM tools for time varying electromagnetic field simulation
- Strong background in RF system modeling and near field analysis
- Experience with circuit simulation and parasitic coupling analysis;
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or Julia for automation and numerical optimization
- MSc or PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field
- Strong problem solving mindset and hands on engineering approach
Preferred:
- Experience working in quantum hardware environments
- Familiarity with ion trap architectures and QPU design
- Exposure to multi physics simulation environments
