RF/Microwave Researcher

Job Description

Job Title: RF/Microwave Researcher. Location: Yorktown Heights, New York, USA

IBM Quantum is looking for a skilled RF/Microwave Researcher to join its Quantum Components team; You will contribute to the design and testing of high-performance microwave circuits for advanced quantum computing systems; The work focuses on Josephson parametric devices, including quantum-limited amplifiers and isolators, and supports model-to-hardware development for future quantum hardware platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and characterize parametric Josephson junction devices, such as amplifiers, frequency converters, and isolators.
  • Perform laboratory verification and hardware characterization for readout chains and quantum-limited components.
  • Correlate experimental data with design models to guide hardware improvements;
  • Design and implement novel measurement techniques for high-volume component screening;
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to share results, contribute to new ideas, and advance research objectives.
  • Communicate technical findings through documentation and presentations.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., physics, electrical engineering, applied physics).
  • Experience with cryogenic systems such as dilution refrigerators, cryocoolers, and liquid helium/nitrogen environments.
  • Familiarity with superconducting RF systems and low-noise circuit measurements;
  • Strong skills in RF calibration and measurement techniques, including test fixture design.
  • Proficiency in using RF test equipment: vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, data generators, power meters, and frequency synthesizers.
  • Programming experience in Python and Jupyter Notebooks.
  • Skills in data aggregation, visualization, and analysis.

Preferred:

  • Doctorate degree in a relevant discipline;
  • Understanding of quantum device behavior and cryogenic circuit performance.
  • Experience with qubit-based measurements and quantum-limited signal chains.
