Senior Algorithm Researcher

Job Description

Position: Senior Algorithm Researcher. Location: Remote (Canada or USA) or Burnaby, British Columbia

D-Wave is looking for a Senior Algorithm Researcher to join its Algorithms, Performance, and Tools (APT) team; In this position, you will design and implement optimization algorithms that solve complex, real-world problems; Your work will support the development of high-performance solvers and hybrid quantum classical services.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement advanced algorithms and heuristics for large-scale combinatorial optimization problems.
  • Improve and maintain existing optimization solvers used by D-Wave’s customer base.
  • Lead technical initiatives and projects from concept through delivery;
  • Collaborate with internal teams (engineering, product, and services) to tailor solutions to specific customer needs.
  • Contribute to D-Wave's proprietary and open-source optimization frameworks;
  • Keep up to date with current research in discrete optimization and hybrid quantum algorithms.
  • Analyze performance and identify areas for solver improvement or refactoring.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in Operations Research, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field—or equivalent professional experience.
  • 4+ years of experience applying optimization and algorithmic techniques in a practical setting.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python for algorithm development;
  • Hands-on experience with solver technologies such as Constraint Programming, Mixed Integer Programming, SAT solvers, or Routing/Scheduling engines.
  • Familiarity with tools like Gurobi, CPLEX, SCIP, OR-Tools, or similar;
  • Strong knowledge of discrete optimization and heuristic methods.
  • Ability to scope technical work and anticipate potential challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
