Scientist – Fault-Tolerant Algorithms

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Scientist – Fault-Tolerant Quantum Algorithms. Location: Basel, Switzerland; Göteborg, Sweden; Remote, US (with office options in College Park, MD or Bothell, WA). Travel: Up to 10% domestic and international

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement fault-tolerant quantum algorithms with significant commercial and scientific applications across various industries.
  • Collaborate directly with internal and external clients to identify and solve impactful problems using IonQ’s trapped-ion quantum systems;
  • Benchmark fault-tolerant quantum algorithms against NISQ and classical HPC methods, contributing deep technical expertise to performance evaluation.
  • Develop foundational intellectual property and publish findings in leading peer-reviewed journals and conferences;
  • Contribute to the development of the broader FTQC ecosystem, including simulators, compilers, metrics, and standards.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, or related field.
  • 6+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven expertise in fault-tolerant quantum computing, demonstrated through talks, publications, code repositories, patents, or contributions to open-source tools.
  • Hands-on experience with quantum SDKs such as Qiskit, and programming languages like Python or C++.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, especially in multi-disciplinary environments;
  • Experience with benchmarking quantum algorithms and delivering hybrid or cloud-based solutions is highly desirable.
  • Prior involvement in government contracts is a plus.
