Director, Fault-Tolerant Quantum Algorithms

Job Description

Job Title: Director, Fault-Tolerant Quantum Algorithms. Location: Remote, USA (Option to work onsite or hybrid from College Park, MD or Bothell, WA)

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop IonQ’s fault-tolerant quantum algorithms team.
  • Design utility-scale quantum algorithms that outperform classical solutions.
  • Define and execute a multi-year roadmap for fault-tolerant quantum computing (FTQC);
  • Drive cross-functional collaborations with engineering, product, sales, and marketing.
  • Establish best practices and standards for reusable software libraries, simulators, and compilers.
  • Represent IonQ at conferences and in industry forums; publish high-impact research;
  • Contribute to IonQ’s hardware roadmap by advising on application-driven hardware needs.
  • Grow and mentor a high-performance team, fostering innovation and excellence.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven leadership in FTQC algorithm research and implementation.
  • 15+ years in R&D related to algorithms or computational science.
  • 5+ years leading complex, multi-organization quantum or deep-tech initiatives;
  • Strong track record of publications, patents, or product launches in fault-tolerant quantum computing.
  • Experience in commercializing new technologies and securing R&D contracts;
  • Familiarity with resource modeling, simulators, quantum libraries, and toolchain development.

Preferred:

  • Experience in government or defense contracting.
  • Background in launching quantum solutions for scientific or industrial sectors;
  • Deep understanding of the tradeoffs between FTQC, NISQ, and classical HPC algorithms.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary Range: $215,462 – $282,095 (based on experience and location)
  • Additional Compensation: Performance bonus and equity package
