Software Engineer, Quantum Control

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Software Engineer, Quantum Control (Boulder Opal). Location: Los Angeles, California (Hybrid)

This role serves as the bridge between research and engineering, developing scalable solutions for quantum hardware calibration and automation; You will collaborate with world-class quantum physicists and engineers to deliver software that drives innovation and enables the next generation of quantum systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with researchers and experimentalists to develop tools that enhance quantum research and system control.
  • Design and implement reusable, scalable software features for quantum control platforms;
  • Develop and optimize modular back-end architectures and APIs for performance and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues while maintaining high responsiveness to users and internal teams.
  • Work across product, design, and infrastructure teams to deliver integrated, end-to-end software solutions.
  • Improve code quality, security, and overall system efficiency;
  • Stay current with quantum technology trends and contribute to ongoing innovation.
  • Mentor junior engineers and help strengthen the overall technical culture.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (PhD or MSc preferred) in Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of quantum physics and quantum computing concepts.
  • Proficiency in Python and modern software development practices;
  • Experience in developing software tools for quantum hardware calibration or control systems.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across research and engineering teams;
  • Proven ability to design scalable software architectures and troubleshoot complex systems.
  • Experience mentoring and supporting junior engineers.

Preferred:

  • Experience with quantum hardware control systems;
  • Experience with Python frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI.
  • Prior experience working in a startup or scale-up environment.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Base salary range: $135,000 - $210,000, depending on experience and location.
  • May include annual discretionary bonuses, equity, and other forms of compensation.
