Cryogenics Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Cryogenics Engineer. Location: Fremont, CA (On-site at Rigetti’s FAB and R&D facility)

This hands-on role supports the development of advanced quantum computing technologies in a deep R&D environment; You will work with physicists, engineers, and technicians to assemble, test, and maintain cryogenic and RF systems critical to Rigetti’s quantum hardware.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain cryogenic equipment such as scroll pumps, turbo pumps, cryo compressors, and high-vacuum valves.
  • Conduct helium leak tests, pump rebuilds, and manage thermal systems.
  • Assemble, validate, and install electro-mechanical, cryogenic, vacuum, and RF systems with precision;
  • Test and debug custom RF control systems using electronic test equipment (network analyzers, multimeters, oscilloscopes, DC power supplies, and in-house tools).
  • Develop and execute test plans for advanced RF components.
  • Support cryogenic systems on-call in rotation with the Engineering Operations team.
  • Prepare, inspect, and package quantum chip assemblies for testing;
  • Follow, create, and adapt standard operating procedures and documentation.
  • Interpret CAD drawings and engineering specifications.
  • Travel up to 10% to support external installations with customers and partners.

Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Physics, Engineering, or equivalent industrial/military experience (MS or PhD preferred).
  • Substantial lab experience with sub-Kelvin cryogenic equipment.
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma, DOE, or other statistical test methods;
  • Experience with high-availability systems and large scientific equipment.
  • Hands-on experience assembling and maintaining scientific instruments or electro-mechanical assemblies.
  • Knowledge of dilution refrigerators or related cryogenic systems strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Python or related scripting languages;
  • Strong skills in vacuum plumbing, P&ID, and lab equipment.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Experience collaborating with vendors and external stakeholders.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $160,000 – $200,000 annually (final offer based on experience, skills, and location).
