Job Description
Job Title: Equipment Engineer, AWS Center for Quantum Computing – Fabrication. Location: Pasadena, California, USA
You will work in a cleanroom environment alongside scientists and engineers to ensure reliable lab operations and high equipment performance.
Responsibilities:
- Troubleshoot and resolve equipment and lab infrastructure issues
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and equipment calibrations
- Maximize equipment uptime through improved maintenance plans and documentation
- Own and manage the health and performance of assigned equipment and lab spaces;
- Work with equipment vendors and field service engineers during installations and repairs
- Supervise, document, and verify vendor service work
- Develop and document standard operating procedures and fixes;
- Support hardware modifications, lab upgrades, and new equipment installations
- Track equipment performance and health using manufacturing execution systems
- Maintain detailed documentation for procedures, issues, and improvements
- Ensure safe, reliable, and high-quality lab operations
A Day in the Role:
- Perform daily walkthroughs of assigned lab areas and equipment
- Address new and ongoing equipment issues based on team priorities
- Execute preventive maintenance and calibration tasks;
- Work on lab and equipment improvement projects when systems are stable;
- Document all work clearly to support long-term reliability and team efficiency
- Focus on enabling reliable fabrication of quantum devices for experiments
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in manufacturing equipment development
or a Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, engineering technology, or equivalent - Experience maintaining material handling and integrated equipment systems;
- Hands-on experience with lab hardware such as digital scopes, logic analyzers, and soldering tools
- Experience with vacuum, high vacuum, or ultra-high vacuum systems;
- Experience with bonders, flip-chip bonders, and probers
Preferred:
- Familiarity with reactive ion etching, thin film deposition, metrology, wet etch, and photolithography
- Experience with backend semiconductor fabrication tools
- Knowledge of SolidWorks or similar design software;
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, writing, and communication skills
- Ability to learn new tools and technologies quickly;
- Self-starter with strong organization and ownership mindset
Team and Work Environment:
- Collaborate with research scientists and process engineers
- Support fabrication of quantum devices for experimental research
- Work in a cleanroom-based research and development facility;
- Operate and improve advanced fabrication and characterization equipment
Compensation and Benefits:
- Base salary range: $105,600 to $185,000 per year, depending on location and experience
- Additional compensation may include equity, sign-on bonuses, and other incentives
