Intern: Quantum Computing Research

Job Description

Job Title: Intern 2026: Quantum Computing Applications Research. Location: United States - Yorktown Heights, New York, San Jose, California, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Albany, New York.

This role places you at the core of IBM’s research ecosystem, working across quantum computing, high performance computing, and advanced software systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify practical quantum algorithms and application areas for near-term and early fault-tolerant quantum devices
  • Benchmark classical algorithms to create fair and meaningful comparisons with quantum approaches
  • Analyze quantum resource requirements based on problem size, circuit design, and synthesis methods;
  • Implement and test near-term quantum algorithms on real quantum processors using available frameworks
  • Develop new tools and capabilities to support large-scale quantum advantage experiments
  • Design and study compiler optimizations for quantum circuits targeting fault-tolerant architectures

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a closely related field

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in a related technical field

Technical and Professional Qualifications:

  • Strong background in quantum algorithm design and analysis;
  • Experience or academic exposure to quantum compilers, quantum architectures, or experimental quantum computing
  • Proficiency in scientific programming, especially Python or similar languages

Preferred:

  • Experience with high-performance programming languages such as C++ or Rust
  • Exposure to large-scale software projects with multiple contributors;
  • Hands-on experience with error mitigation, error suppression, or quantum control techniques
  • Experience using quantum computing frameworks such as Qiskit or Cirq
