Director of Microfabrication

Job Description

Job Title: Director of Microfabrication. Location: Plymouth, MN. Job Type: Full-time | On-site

Quantinuum is seeking an experienced Director of Microfabrication to lead the development of advanced microfabricated devices; including ion traps and photonic components, crucial to scaling up our quantum computing hardware; You will translate business objectives into technical strategies; manage internal teams, and collaborate with key external partners to drive innovation and execution across the full device development lifecycle.

Responsibilities:

  • Set strategic direction for the microfabrication department, including technical scope, team growth, resource planning, and collaboration strategies.
  • Lead all stages of ion trap and photonic device development, from design and layout to fabrication, testing, and delivery;
  • Oversee execution of department goals, including milestone tracking, resource allocation, and risk management;
  • Identify and manage strategic partnerships, subcontracts, and vendor relationships to support fabrication objectives.
  • Mentor and manage a team of section managers and technical leads across various fabrication domains.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 15 years of experience in one or more of the following areas: ion trap fabrication, integrated optics, chip-scale photonics, or MEMS device processing.
  • U.S. citizenship (required under export control and national security regulations).

Preferred:

  • PhD in Physics or Engineering.
  • Expertise in photolithography, deep reactive ion etching, thin film deposition, electroplating, and advanced chip packaging.
  • Experience with finite element modeling (thermal, optical, electrical, mechanical).
  • Background in quantum hardware or related R&D fields;
  • Familiarity with IP agreements, joint development partnerships, and publication of technical work.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary range: $224,000 – $280,000 (inclusive of incentive eligibility).
