Engineer, Electro-Optic Design

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Systems Engineer, Electro-Optic Design. Location: Milpitas, California, United States

The Senior Systems Engineer will lead the design, development, testing, and integration of electro-optic and fiber optic systems within PsiQuantum’s quantum computing platform; This is a hands-on engineering role focused on building and validating complex photonics systems with high reliability.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead sub-system design integrating fiber optics, electronics, firmware, software, and thermal components.
  • Define and document system-level requirements.
  • Build and test prototypes, manage bills of materials (BOM), and maintain system documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to debug software and hardware control systems;
  • Design and execute validation tests, and work closely with the System Build team.
  • Source and evaluate advanced fiber optic components; work with vendors to qualify them for quantum use.
  • Use Python scripting to interact with lab equipment and internal control systems;
  • Write and maintain detailed documentation of system performance;
  • Coordinate with architecture, design, and experimental teams to define next-generation system needs.
  • Contribute to the full product lifecycle, from R&D to system deployment.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics.
  • 2+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • 4+ years in optical system design, testing, and validation.
  • Strong background in fiber optic systems and photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
  • Proficient in optical test tools like power meters, OBR, and OSA;
  • Experience with photonics/electronics instrumentation and Python software control;
  • Skilled in test method development, tuning algorithms, and product development cycles.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and communicate effectively.

Preferred:

  • Experience in electro-optic system design.
  • Familiarity with vacuum systems;
  • Knowledge of optical simulations, photonics, and non-linear optics.

Benefits:

  • Base Salary Range: $155,000 – $195,000 USD (Bay Area)
  • Total compensation includes equity and benefits;
  • Salary may vary based on experience, location, and qualifications.
