Experimental R&D AMO Physicist

Job Description

Job Title: Experimental R&D AMO Physicist. Location: Golden Valley, MN, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and test quantum computing systems based on trapped ion qubits.
  • Operate and maintain experimental setups including lasers, UHV systems, and control electronics.
  • Perform system characterization and data collection to validate performance;
  • Conduct design trade studies to optimize experimental methods and setups.
  • Present research findings at scientific conferences and publish results;
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, physicists, and software teams.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics or related field, completed before the start date.
  • At least 4 years of experience (including PhD research) in one or more areas:
    • Quantum information systems
    • Trapped ion or cold atom systems
    • Precision spectroscopy
    • Optics and vacuum systems
    • Electronics and cryogenics
  • U.S. person status required (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or protected status).
  • Not eligible if solely a national of the People's Republic of China or Russia unless also a U.S. citizen.

Preferred:

  • Experience designing or operating quantum information processing systems.
  • Background in laser cooling, ion or neutral atom trapping.
  • Simulation/modeling to inform experiment design;
  • Programming experience for experimental control, data collection, and signal processing.
  • Strong publication record and communication skills.
  • Leadership or mentoring experience in academic or industrial research environments.
