Job Description
Job Title: Manager, Ion Trap Development. Location: Bothell, WA or College Park, MD (Hybrid, with up to 20% travel)
This position involves managing a multi-disciplinary team and driving technical development from design through production; You will collaborate closely with photonics, architecture, & product teams to ensure high-quality system integration.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the roadmap, objectives, and execution for ion trap development and production.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams for seamless integration of ion traps into system architecture.
- Manage external partnerships, including U.S. and international foundries;
- Draft statements of work and support procurement and contract negotiations.
- Oversee low-volume trap production in cleanroom settings and ensure successful packaging.
- Perform failure analysis and risk tracking for microfabricated devices;
- Track performance impacts on cost, schedule, and technical goals; resolve issues and manage critical project decisions.
- Assist in scaling technology from R&D to production with faster learning cycles and demonstration milestones.
- Mentor and develop team members, offering consistent feedback on performance.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or higher in engineering or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years managing R&D or low-volume semiconductor manufacturing teams.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in fast-paced R&D or new product development using CMOS or MEMS devices.
- Strong background in foundry process development and transfer to production.
- Expertise in microfabrication techniques and device qualification;
- Proven leadership and cross-functional project management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred:
- Deep knowledge of ion trap design and fabrication.
- Experience integrating ion traps with quantum systems, including cryogenics, vacuum, and electronics.
- Experience with low-noise RF and electrical measurements;
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or other relevant programming languages.
- Familiarity with data analysis tools and Jira project tracking.

Work Location Details: The role is based in Bothell, WA or College Park, MD, with partial remote flexibility. You may be required to be near one of IonQ's offices (College Park, Seattle, Toronto, or Basel). Expansion to more locations is underway.
