Scientist, Coherence Fabrication

Job Description

Job Title: Research Scientist, Coherence Fabrication. Location: Goleta, California, USA

You will lead research, collaborate with internal and external partners, and contribute to the global quantum research community through publications & technical outreach.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, optimize, and sustain semiconductor fabrication processes in a cleanroom environment.
  • Design and execute large-scale tests and experiments to validate device performance.
  • Apply microfabrication techniques to improve quantum device coherence and reliability;
  • Conduct failure analysis using SEM/EDS, optical microscopy, X-ray, FTIR, and related methods.
  • Define project goals, data structures, frameworks, and evaluation metrics for research initiatives;
  • Publish research findings in leading journals and conferences, and represent Google in collaborations with universities and technical institutes.
  • Identify gaps in existing technology and develop strategies to advance fabrication capabilities.
  • Mentor junior researchers and contribute to the long-term research roadmap for Google Quantum AI.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience leading research projects in a relevant area;
  • Proven track record of scientific publications or conference submissions.
  • Hands-on experience in semiconductor fabrication and process development in a cleanroom.
  • Familiarity with vacuum, etch, lithography, and metrology systems;
  • Experience using advanced analytical tools for material and device characterization.
  • Knowledge of how microfabrication methods affect quantum device performance.
  • English language proficiency required.

Preferred:

  • Expertise with multiple semiconductor tools and systems (vacuum, PVD/CVD, wet etch).
  • Background in failure analysis and quantum material characterization;
  • Strong understanding of quantum hardware coherence and error correction techniques.

Benefits and Instructions:

  • Base salary range: $166,000 – $244,000, plus bonus, equity, and comprehensive benefits.
