Job Description
Job Title: Staff Software Engineer – Billing & Metering. Location: Bothell, Washington, United States; College Park, Maryland, United States (Hybrid or Remote for the right candidate)
This position focuses on building scalable solutions that enable seamless customer billing, usage metering & payment processing.
Responsibilities:
- Design and lead the architecture of IonQ’s next-generation billing and payments platform.
- Write detailed technical design documents, RFCs, and long-term system roadmaps;
- Act as the technical authority for the billing domain and guide other senior engineers through mentorship and technical best practices.
- Solve complex problems such as usage-based billing models, tax compliance, and integration of international payment methods.
- Collaborate with teams in Product, Finance, and Legal to ensure technical solutions align with company goals;
- Remain hands-on with coding, critical path development, and production issue analysis.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent training or experience.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with proven technical leadership;
- 4+ years of hands-on experience with payment processing platforms and Stripe APIs (Billing, Connect, Invoicing).
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and microservices design.
- Experience building large-scale, mission-critical systems with Go or JavaScript;
- Clear communication skills with the ability to write detailed technical documentation.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools is a plus.
Preferred:
- 10+ years of experience in software development.
- Expertise with global payment systems, currency conversion, and tax compliance.
- Knowledge of PCI DSS compliance and revenue recognition;
- Experience integrating fraud detection systems and subscription billing solutions.
- Contributions to the broader tech community through open-source or public presentations.
Benefits and Compensation:
- Base salary range: $162,920 - $213,304, depending on experience and location.
