Software Engineering Manager, Control

Job Description

Job Title: Software Engineering Manager, Control Stack. Location: Pasadena, California, USA

This role involves managing a team of scientists and software engineers to develop software and infrastructure supporting scalable fault-tolerant quantum computers; You will collaborate closely with experimental physics and hardware teams, shaping the software-hardware interface for next-generation quantum systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Define and drive the technical vision for the software-hardware interface in collaboration with senior engineers.
  • Partner with hardware and science teams to establish software needs and priorities.
  • Manage resource allocation and planning for project delivery.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership in architecture, metrics, and implementation.
  • Oversee code reviews, design documentation, and technical evaluations;
  • Lead hiring activities, create growth plans, and develop interview processes.
  • Coach and mentor engineers to improve technical and collaborative skills.
  • Translate scientific needs into software project proposals and ensure timely delivery.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience.
  • 7+ years of engineering experience;
  • Proven track record managing the full software development lifecycle.
  • Experience collaborating with scientists or hardware engineers.
  • Demonstrated success hiring and developing engineering teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in one or more of:
    • Quantum control systems (commercial, academic, or open-source).
    • RFSoC and FPGA development (e.g., AMD ZCU216).
    • Laboratory test and measurement equipment (Spectrum Analyzer, VNA, etc.).

Preferred:

  • Experience with programming language implementation or compiler development.
  • Background in embedded systems with strict timing (bare metal, RTOS, custom Linux).
  • Familiarity with telemetry systems (CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry);
  • Knowledge of high-performance networking (RDMA, UltraEthernet, UALink).
  • Experience with distributed systems and event streaming.
