Software Engineering Manager, Quantum

Job Description

Job Title: Staff Software Engineering Manager, Quantum AI. location: Goleta, California, USA

The team builds and maintains the software and infrastructure that allow researchers to run quantum programs on Google’s quantum hardware; The position requires strong technical leadership, deep software engineering experience, and the ability to support large-scale research platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of 4 to 6 engineers responsible for developing and maintaining the quantum research platform used across Google’s Quantum AI efforts.
  • Work closely with researchers, product teams, and NISQ algorithm teams to plan roadmaps, understand research needs, and set technical priorities.
  • Oversee delivery of software and APIs that allow researchers to access and interact with quantum hardware;
  • Collaborate with engineering leaders across the wider quantum software group to design and implement features that scale across teams.
  • Manage interfaces across open source, internal systems, and API layers to ensure researchers have reliable and efficient tools;
  • Guide technical decisions, review design work, and support execution across multiple distributed teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • Eight years of experience in software development.
  • Three years of experience leading full-stack development across back-end languages such as Java, Python, Golang, or C++, and front-end technologies such as
  • JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS;
  • Three years of experience in a technical leadership role.
  • Two years of experience managing people or leading teams;
  • Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree or PhD in a technical field, experience with Cirq, OpenFermion, numpy, scipy, sympy, pandas, protocol buffers,
  • Google Cloud Platform, Qiskit, or QASM, experience maintaining open-source projects, familiarity with Rust, and knowledge in machine learning, distributed systems,
  • quantum simulation, quantum chemistry, quantum information, or quantum physics.

Benefits and Compensation:

This is a full-time position with a US base salary range of 197,000 to 291,000 dollars, plus bonus, equity, and benefits; Actual compensation depends on factors such as location, experience, and job-related skills. Benefits include Google’s standard health, wellness, and workplace programs.
