Job Title: Staff Site Reliability Engineer – Platform

IonQ is seeking its first Site Reliability Engineer dedicated to the cloud platform team; This role focuses on improving system reliability, performance, scalability, and operational excellence for both internal engineering teams and external customers.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain reliable cloud and on-prem infrastructure for IonQ’s quantum computing platform
- Manage monitoring, alerting, and observability systems across Kubernetes and Linux environments
- Support both product systems and internal engineering teams by reducing operational toil
- Improve system performance, uptime, and latency at scale;
- Maintain Kubernetes clusters, including self-managed, on-prem, and cloud-based deployments
- Operate, debug, and optimize Linux systems and networking environments
- Automate infrastructure processes using scripting and tooling;
- Lead and learn from incident response, root cause analysis, and reliability improvements
- Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices across the organization
- Contribute clear and effective technical documentation
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
- 8 or more years of professional experience, or equivalent education and experience
- 5 or more years of experience in Site Reliability Engineering;
- 3 or more years of hands-on Kubernetes experience
- Strong experience with Linux or Unix operating systems
- Experience with containerized and virtualized environments
- Solid understanding of networking concepts such as TCP/IP, routing, and network topologies
- Strong scripting skills, including Python or shell scripting;
- Proven ability to identify automation opportunities and implement solutions
- Experience learning from production incidents
- Strong written communication skills
Preferred:
- 10 or more years of software development experience
- Experience with VMware and Terraform
- Experience using Google Cloud
- Experience scaling databases and production applications
- Experience deploying bare-metal Kubernetes clusters;
- Experience leading incident response and resolution
- Experience conducting incident research and post-incident analysis
Benefits and Compensation:
- Base salary range: $141,670 to $185,482 USD;
- Total compensation includes base salary, bonus, and equity
- Compensation varies based on location, experience, and role requirements
