System Operations Manager

Job Description

Job Title: System Operations Manager at IonQ. Location: College Park, MD (Remote/Hybrid options available)

Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a cross-functional team of system operators and resilience engineers.
• Oversee operational stability, throughput, and uptime of IonQ's quantum computer fleet.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to maintain system integrity and plan improvements.
• Develop tools and frameworks for enhanced system observability and automation;
• Manage operations costs, hardware inventory, and cross-site logistics;
• Set and track key performance indicators related to platform reliability and efficiency.
• Contribute to hiring and talent development initiatives across global operations.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or related technical field.
• 8+ years of relevant professional experience, including 2+ years of technical leadership.
• Familiarity with distributed systems, hardware operations, and production incident response;
• Proficiency in one or more general-purpose programming languages (e.g., Go, Python, JavaScript);
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex systems and mentor technical teams.

Preferred:

• Master’s or PhD in AMO Physics or related discipline.
• Direct experience in resilience/reliability engineering or DevOps;
• Exposure to Learning From Incidents (LFI), site reliability engineering, or operational excellence frameworks;
• Background in quantum computing, especially trapped-ion technology, is highly desirable.
