Job Description

Job Title: Senior Thermal Mechanical Engineer. Location: Palo Alto, California, United States

PsiQuantum’s Cryogenic Engineering team is seeking a Senior Thermal Mechanical Engineer to lead simulation and design efforts related to the thermal and structural performance of quantum computing hardware; You will be responsible for integrated optical and electronic assemblies operating under cryogenic conditions; The role involves close collaboration across internal teams and external vendors.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and simulate thermal and mechanical systems for optical-electronic assemblies under cryogenic conditions.
  • Apply knowledge in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and structural mechanics to develop systems for quantum computing hardware.
  • Build chip power models, perform power measurements, and validate simulations through testing and feedback.
  • Solve field issues involving thermal and structural performance;
  • Lead requirements management, material selection, FMEA, and tolerance analysis for mechanical components.
  • Coordinate with vendors on manufacturing processes;
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams during all phases of development.

Qualifications:

  • B.Sc., M.Sc., or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or Physics.
  • Proficiency in engineering tools like Mathcad, Matlab, IcePak, ANSYS Workbench, Fluent, SpaceClaim, SolidWorks, or NX.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD);
  • Ability to correlate experimental results with thermal models;
  • Strong documentation skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of material and manufacturing constraints under cryogenic conditions.
  • Familiarity with optical system specs and component behavior under thermal and structural shifts.
  • Experience in STOP analysis (Structural-Thermal-Optical Performance).
  • Background in CPU/GPU/SoC architecture and hardware-software co-design is a plus.

Benefits:

  • Base salary: $130,000 – $170,000 (Bay Area rates)
