Materials Characterization Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Materials Characterization Engineer – Materials Team, AWS Center for Quantum Computing. Location: Pasadena, California, USA

You’ll work on a highly skilled team focused on developing and improving materials that enhance the performance of superconducting quantum processors; Your core responsibility will be to use advanced metrology tools & materials analysis techniques to evaluate surfaces and interfaces of quantum devices.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and run materials characterization workflows for thin films and devices.
  • Operate both in and outside cleanroom environments to investigate material and fabrication variables affecting quantum device performance.
  • Maintain and improve equipment for materials characterization;
  • Collaborate with other scientists and engineers to align findings with fabrication outcomes.
  • Present technical findings to the broader team and document engineering insights.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, physics, applied physics, or a related engineering field.
  • Hands-on experience with tools like SEM, EDX, FIB, and at least one of the following: AFM, nano-IR, XPS, SIMS, XRD, XRR.
  • Proven work in materials characterization and failure analysis;
  • Experience linking material analysis to product performance improvements.

Preferred:

  • Master’s or PhD in materials science or related field.
  • Programming experience in Python, Julia, MATLAB, or Mathematica.
  • Experience characterizing superconducting materials;
  • Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication and thin-film deposition techniques.
  • Experience with upgrading or maintaining materials characterization systems.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work in an inclusive, diverse team environment.
