Job Description
Job Title: Staff Mechanical Engineer - Trap Control. Location: College Park, Maryland, United States (onsite with option to work from home 1-2 days per week)
We are seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer with strong expertise in electronic packaging and enclosure design to join our cross-functional team; This role is central to designing and testing mechanical systems that control the qubits at the core of our quantum computers.
Responsibilities:
- Design and develop enclosures and packaging for electronic assemblies, focusing on thermal management, EMI/RFI shielding, vibration resistance, and manufacturability.
- Build 3D CAD models and detailed 2D drawings of enclosures, assemblies, and components using tools such as SolidWorks.
- Conduct structural and thermal analysis (FEA/CFD) to confirm design reliability under different conditions;
- Select suitable materials and manufacturing processes, including injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, and die casting.
- Work closely with electrical engineers to ensure proper integration of components, cable routing, and connectors.
- Develop and run testing protocols to validate enclosure durability, thermal performance, and environmental resilience.
- Prepare Bill of Materials (BOMs) and technical documentation for manufacturing.
- Participate in design reviews and provide feedback to improve product design and performance.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- At least 5 years of professional experience, with 3+ years in electronic packaging and enclosure design.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks;
- Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and assembly techniques.
- Familiarity with thermal management principles for electronic systems.
Preferred:
- 10+ years of mechanical design experience focused on electronic packaging.
- Experience with structural and thermal analysis software such as ANSYS or COMSOL.
- Background in micro-electronic packaging and EMI/RFI shielding;
- Experience designing for precision instrumentation in lab environments.
- Knowledge of rapid prototyping methods such as 3D printing.
- Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Base salary range: $123,191 – $161,289, with additional bonus and equity.
