Optical Packaging Engineer

Job Description

Job Title: Optical Packaging Engineer. Location: Boston, MA (hybrid or onsite)

As an Optical Packaging Engineer, you’ll join a cross-functional team focused on deploying and packaging integrated photonic devices, especially for cryogenic environments; This work supports both IonQ’s internal quantum systems and photonic tools used by external clients in academia, government, and industry.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and standardize low-loss, cryo-compatible optical packaging processes
  • Evaluate and optimize tools and techniques to support high-quality photonic packaging
  • Create and track process metrics and yields to identify bottlenecks;
  • Work with research and business teams to mature new packaging methods into production-ready systems

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's in engineering, physics, optics, or related field with 3+ years of industry experience, or a PhD in a relevant field
  • Experience with nanofabrication or optical packaging;
  • Hands-on work with fiber optics or integrated photonic devices
  • Familiarity with CAD software for hardware prototyping

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of experience, or PhD with 2+ years of experience in industry
  • Experience with OSAT or related industries is a plus;
  • Skills in fiber packaging, photonic design, precision fiber alignment, or optical adhesive dispensing
  • Proven track record working with integrated photonics in cryogenic or unusual environments

Important Notes:

  • This role requires access to technology regulated under U.S. export controls. Only U.S. Persons (citizens, permanent residents, etc.) may qualify unless export licenses can be obtained
  • IonQ has offices in College Park (MD), Bothell (WA), Toronto (Canada), and Basel (Switzerland). While this role is based in Boston, future roles may open in other locations
  • Travel is minimal to none
