Software Engineer, Coherent Control

Job Description

Job Title: Staff Software Engineer, Coherent Control Gate Operations – IonQ. Location: Remote, US (Hybrid or Onsite options available in Bothell, WA, or College Park, MD)

Responsibilities:

• Architect and develop code for controlling next-generation quantum systems and metrology hardware.
• Lead the development of new algorithms and infrastructure for data collection and system control.
• Define physical and firmware architectures that prioritize scalability and reliability;
• Establish best practices for the development process, quality assurance, and end-user documentation.
• Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to align software and hardware requirements;
• Interface between opto-mechanical teams and software teams to define capabilities and requirements.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field (non-traditional backgrounds are welcome).
• 7+ years of experience in software development with general-purpose programming languages (e.g., Python, C++).
• 5+ years of experience in firmware development (real-time and Linux systems);
• Proficient in writing drivers/APIs for instrumentation access and control.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills;
• Broad understanding of OS architecture and its implications on code development.

Preferred:

• Experience with FPGA-based control systems and cloud-based provisioning.
• Background in robotics or hardware abstraction libraries.
• Familiarity with digital signal processing;
• Strong practices in DevOps.
