Job Title: Senior Vacuum System Engineer. Location: Palo Alto, California, United States
As a Senior Vacuum System Engineer within the Cryogenic Engineering team; you will lead the design, analysis, and implementation of vacuum systems that directly support quantum computer infrastructure. This role requires deep experience in thermal, fluid, and structural mechanics; as well as hands-on engineering in cryogenic and vacuum systems.
Responsibilities:
- Design and develop advanced vacuum systems for use in quantum computing hardware.
- Perform detailed analyses and testing on pumps, piping, and pressure control mechanisms.
- Lead projects from concept through on-site commissioning of vacuum equipment;
- Troubleshoot and resolve field issues in vacuum environments;
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure system reliability and performance.
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive engineering documentation, including FMEAs and tolerance analyses.
- Work closely with vendors to refine manufacturing processes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics.
- 5+ years of experience in thermal and fluid system engineering.
- Deep expertise in high vacuum systems, including leak detection, gas analysis, and cryogenic operation.
- Proficiency with engineering tools such as ANSYS Workbench, SINDA/FLUINT, Thermal Desktop, SolidWorks, Fluent, SpaceClaim, and MATLAB.
- Familiarity with ASME BPVC and B31.3 codes;
- Strong analytical skills and experience with FEA, CFD, and risk evaluation methods.
- Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
Preferred:
- Background in cryogenic design and material performance under extreme conditions.
- Hands-on fabrication experience (e.g., welding, machining, brazing).
- Exposure to ultra-high vacuum components like ion and turbo pumps;
- Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
- Experience with lab testing and automated data acquisition.
Compensation:
- U.S. Base Salary Range: $133,000 – $173,000 (depending on experience and location).
- Full-time employees receive equity and a comprehensive benefits package;
