Job Description

Job Title: Senior Vacuum System Engineer. Location: Palo Alto, California, United States

As a Senior Vacuum System Engineer within the Cryogenic Engineering team; you will lead the design, analysis, and implementation of vacuum systems that directly support quantum computer infrastructure. This role requires deep experience in thermal, fluid, and structural mechanics; as well as hands-on engineering in cryogenic and vacuum systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop advanced vacuum systems for use in quantum computing hardware.
  • Perform detailed analyses and testing on pumps, piping, and pressure control mechanisms.
  • Lead projects from concept through on-site commissioning of vacuum equipment;
  • Troubleshoot and resolve field issues in vacuum environments;
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure system reliability and performance.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive engineering documentation, including FMEAs and tolerance analyses.
  • Work closely with vendors to refine manufacturing processes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics.
  • 5+ years of experience in thermal and fluid system engineering.
  • Deep expertise in high vacuum systems, including leak detection, gas analysis, and cryogenic operation.
  • Proficiency with engineering tools such as ANSYS Workbench, SINDA/FLUINT, Thermal Desktop, SolidWorks, Fluent, SpaceClaim, and MATLAB.
  • Familiarity with ASME BPVC and B31.3 codes;
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with FEA, CFD, and risk evaluation methods.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.

Preferred:

  • Background in cryogenic design and material performance under extreme conditions.
  • Hands-on fabrication experience (e.g., welding, machining, brazing).
  • Exposure to ultra-high vacuum components like ion and turbo pumps;
  • Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
  • Experience with lab testing and automated data acquisition.

Compensation:

  • U.S. Base Salary Range: $133,000 – $173,000 (depending on experience and location).
  • Full-time employees receive equity and a comprehensive benefits package;
  • Location-based salary adjustments apply.
